Remove all wood trim from the garage door post using a hammer and pry bar. Some garage doors are. The garage door provides a way for your car to get in and most garages also have a window. Once the old door frame is removed the rot is visible in the wood framing. The ever jamb is the answer for an affordable rot resistant door frame kit. Tap on the back of it with a hammer to drive the tip in as far as you can. Support the ceiling of the garage using some lumber.

Take down any trim or any external pieces of wood which are not part of the garage door header. You can t replace a 16 chunk of it and retain any structural integrity. The various openings in the sides of your garage are also important parts of the framework. It is a good idea to sandwich 1 2 plywood or osb between the pieces of 2x dimension lumber.

We have an old cinder block garage shed building built in 1967 with 2 9 foot wide garage door openings. If any portion of your garage door header has rotted or softened due to water exposure you need in replace the entire header. Insert the tip of a flat crowbar under the trim. These 9 foot openings are only supported by a makeshift header consisting of 6 cinder blocks sitting horizontally across the top of the opening.

The pvc bottom is factory joined to a primed wood frame that can be drilled sanded and finished just like wood. Outdoor decks horizontal decking boards and stair treads can also hold water. The best way to fix this problem is to replace the header. The rotted piece with new wood of the same thickness and patch the roof covering.

Pry on the crowbar to lift the trim and loosen it.
